Police have intensified searches on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar ahead of the opposition BNP's rally scheduled for Friday.
Police were searching passenger vehicles since Thursday morning, but the search operation has been intensified since 9pm
It was seen that 10-15 policemen took position on the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway and barricaded a section of the road.
Dhaka TribuneThe officers were also seen searching the bags of passengers, and checking their NID cards. Passengers were also reportedly being asked about their reasons to go to Dhaka.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime, Ops and Traffic-North) of Dhaka district Abdullahil Kafi said: "We always search this area, this is a regular procedure. Since there are two political programs in Dhaka, I am insisting on searching so that no one can carry out any kind of chaos.”
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has given permission to both the Awami League and the BNP to hold rallies at the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and Nayapaltan, respectively, in Dhaka on Friday.
