Health Minister Zahid Maleque expressed his frustration regarding medical students opting for other professions, such as the administration or police cadre, through the BCS exam.
"If medical students choose another profession after dedicating so many years in medical college, there is no need to pursue medicine in the first place," he stated during the orientation class and oath-taking ceremony at Dhaka Medical College on Monday.
Zahid Maleque said: "Government spends more than Tk1 crore for a MBBS student in government medical colleges for completing his graduation. This comes from people's tax money, which is invested with the expectation that these students will become doctors and serve the people. However, if they choose other career paths, such as joining the police or administration cadre through BCS, crores of taka of the people are wasted."
Health Minister said: "Since assuming power, the Sheikh Hasina government has been dedicated to women empowerment. Thanks to timely efforts, women empowerment is now prevalent throughout Bangladesh, from the National Parliament to the police, court clerks, and the business sector. This year, 120 out of 230 students admitted to Dhaka Medical College are women, while the other 110 are boys. Moreover, among the recent 10,000 doctor appointments, 6,000 are women and 4,000 are men."
He further said: "Women are excelling in the BCS exam, managing families, and becoming self-sufficient. This achievement aligns with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's vision of empowering women. Through her relentless efforts, women in Bangladesh now play an equal role with men, propelling the nation towards development."
Dhaka Medical College Principal Prof Dr Md Shafiqul Alam Chowdhury presided over the meeting.
