Miscreants stabbed a former union parishad member to death in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur Saturday night.
Police have detained seven people over the incident.
The deceased, Jahurul Haque, 58, was a resident of Phuljhor village and was a former member under ward 7 of Jhorkhali union parishad.
Police said miscreants attacked him with sharp weapons while Jahurul was on his way home from a local market on his motorbike around 11pm, leaving him critically injured.
He succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
The deceased's nephew Kaiser Ahmed said that his uncle Jahurul used to return home by 9pm every day after finishing his work. However, the matter was reported to police after he did not return home at 11pm Saturday night.
Later, at around 11:30pm, news came that Jahurul had been murdered near Ramzan Ali Ibtedai Madrasa in Phuljor Madhyapara, half a kilometre from his uncle's house.
Madarganj Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mahbubul Haque said that around 12am they received the information and recovered the body of the murdered UP member and brought it to the police station.
The deceased has injury marks on his stomach and back. The reason behind the murder is not yet known and the investigation is going on, he added.
