Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday told the visiting election exploratory mission from the European Union (EU) that it is not possible to have fair elections under the incumbent prime minister and the Awami League government.
The party's Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher made this remark in a press briefing following a meeting with the EU delegation in Dhaka.
"We have informed the EU delegation that fair elections cannot be held under the Awami League regime," said the Jamaat leader.
He emphasized the necessity of elections being held under a neutral government to safeguard the country.
Without this, he claimed, the country's citizens would not participate in elections under the current government.
The meeting, which commenced after 2:30pm, was led by Riccardo Shelleri from the European Union delegation.
Four members from Jamaat, including Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum, Central Publicity Affairs Secretary and Central Executive Committee Member Matiur Rahman Akanda, and renowned educationist Professor Abdur Rab, attended the meeting under the leadership of Abdullah Mohammad Taher.
Earlier, the EU pre-election observer delegation also held discussions with the Awami League. Led by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, the nine members of the Awami League delegation included Awami League Advisory Council Member and former ambassador Muhammad Zamir Uddin.
The EU pre-election observation team began their day with a meeting with the BNP. The visiting EU delegation came to the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office at 9am and had a nearly one hour and 15 minutes meeting with the BNP delegation, led by party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
