Naval base key to securing marine resources, says local MP

Professor Muhibur Rahman, member of parliament from Patuakhali-4 constituency, has said that the new naval base in Patuakhali will play a key role in securing the country's marine resources and ensuring security in the territory.

He termed the commissioning of the base a farsighted decision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as part of her plan to build a strong blue-economy and Smart Bangladesh.

The premier on Wednesday commissioned the Bangladesh Navy base titled "BNS Sher-e-Bangla", four patrol craft and four LCUs of 41 PCS at Kalapara in Patuakhali.

The lawmaker told Dhaka Tribune that the base is in a crucial location geographically to protect the country's interests.

He thinks that the naval base will play a vital role in establishing waterway communication with Payra Port, the power plant and other parts of the country.

Maritime experts hope that the base and the ships will play an important role in the prevention of illegal fishing, smuggling, human trafficking, piracy and drug trafficking in the region. They will also play a vital role in combating cyclones and other natural disasters.

Kalapara Upazila Parishad Chairman SM Rakibul Ahsan said the naval base will help improve security, communication, and economy in the region.
