‘Nobody listens’: Awami League leaders frustrated by disorder at rally

Awami League leaders were struggling to control the crowd as thousands of leaders and activists gathered in front of the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Wednesday.

The rally was supposed to start at 3pm but due to rain, the rally started 30 minutes earlier.

Ruling party leaders and activists of Dhaka North and South units joined the rally with banners and posters of their respective units.

At around 2:15pm, supporters of Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastgir Gazi and supporters of Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League President Abu Ahmed fought over trying to take positions in front of the stage.

At one point, both sides were seen tossing chairs before the stage.

At this time Riaz Uddin, office secretary of Dhaka South Awami League, and Abu Ahmed Mannafi, president of the same unit, asked everyone to sit down and keep calm.

Afterwards, several small processions joined from various units of Dhaka North and South with banners.

Awami League Office Secretary Biplab Barua said due to scattered banners, journalists covering the rally were not getting proper pictures or videos.

Abdus Sobhan Golap, publicity secretary of the Awami League, said in frustration: “No one listens.”

Although senior leaders were talking about taking action for non-cooperation, the crowd were not paying attention, he added.
