Pro-BNP lawyers hold protest as EU delegation meets attorney general

Members of the Election Exploratory Mission of the European Union (EU) held a meeting with Bangladesh's chief legal officer, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, on Tuesday, facing protests from pro-BNP lawyers.

The hour-long meeting was held at the attorney general's office at the Supreme Court.

After the meeting, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin told reporters that the meeting was held on criminal, civil, RPO and election laws.

Meanwhile, pro-BNP lawyers protested in front of the office during and after the meeting. They tried to get the attention of the EU delegation to create pressure on the government for a fair election under a neutral government.

At the time, the lawyers started chanting slogans around the EU delegation.

Apart from this, they displayed slogans written on placards.

Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Barrister Qaiser Kamal, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Advocate Kamrul Islam Sajal and others led the protest.

The EU mission will stay in Bangladesh till July 23.

The main objective of the Election Exploratory Mission is to assess the “advisability, usefulness and feasibility” of a possible EU election observation mission for the upcoming parliamentary polls, according to the EU mission in Dhaka.

Earlier in the day, the EU delegation held a meeting with the Election Commission on preparations for the national election.
