Cargo vessel sinking in Bay

A cargo ship is sinking off the coast of the Bay of Bengal in the Sandwip Channel in Chittagong.

Three containers of the ship have been washed away since the incident took place at around 11:30am on Thursday.

The sailors of the ship “Pangaon Express” have been rescued. A  rescue ship from the port has been sent to the spot to rescue the vessel.

The ship was going to Pangaon Inland Container Terminal in Keraniganj with a container of imported goods from Chittagong Port, Secretary Omor Faruk of Chittagong Port Authority confirmed the matter.

“Some parts of Pangaon Express have sunk due to the bad weather at sea. Half of the ship is submerged underwater. A total of 14 people including 12 sailors and two representatives of BIWTA were rescued. The ship had 96 containers. Three of them washed away in the water,” he added.

The official also said a technical team appointed by Dolphin Marine is trying to remove the water and containers from the ship. Meanwhile, a chartered tugboat along with port tugboat Kandari-11 has been dispatched.

Omor Faruk added that a letter has been sent to the ship's company Sea Glory Shipping Agency, to facilitate the swift salvage of the vessel. A probe body has also been formed.

Members of the Bangladesh Navy have been deployed to rescue the ship as well.
