State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hossen on Thursday said 6,704 government primary school buildings across Bangladesh are currently dilapidated.
He was responding to a question from Barisal-2 lawmaker Shah-e-Alam in parliament.
During a question-answer session chaired by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the state minister outlined the government's plans to address this issue saying: "A list of 1,013 schools has been sent to the government's Primary Education Development Program (PEDP) for the construction of additional classrooms and new buildings to replace the dilapidated ones."
In addition to this, Zakir Hossen said a list has been approved for the construction of buildings or additional classrooms at 1,036 schools under the purview of the PEDP.
These approved lists have been forwarded to the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), he added.
Furthermore, Zakir Hossen said the government plans to replace all dilapidated and semi-pucca buildings with new structures by 2025.
"Construction of new buildings or additional classrooms are already underway at schools where the list has been approved," he added.
