BNP to stage city rallies Monday

Two days after violent clashes and arson attacks on buses over the BNP's scheduled sit-ins at Dhaka's entry points, city residents are going to witness another showdown of the party to demand resignation of the prime minister.

The BNP is set to hold “peaceful” rallies in all the metropolitan cities of the country, according to an announcement by the party's secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, made at Dhaka's Gulshan on Saturday.

"We planned to hold a program on Sunday, but we came to know that the ruling Awami League has plans that day. So we will hold our program the next day (today).”

BNP will hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Monday, Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of BNP's media cell, confirmed on Sunday.

This rally will start at 3pm. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will deliver a speech and announce the next program.

Police barred the BNP supporters from staging the sit-in programs at the city's entry points, as they blocked the roads without taking permission. Clashes and arson attacks on public buses and vandalism of police vehicles took place at several places of the city on Saturday.

Fakhrul also alleged that members of different intelligence agencies and ruling party “cadres” torched vehicles in the capital as part of a plot by the government to falsely blame the opposition.

“We have come to know that evil attempts are being made to blame BNP for the incidents of torching and vandalizing vehicles at Matuail and Shyamoli. The members of the government agencies and even cadres of the Awami League have carried out these incidents in a planned way with the help of police and recorded videos before fleeing on motorcycles,” he claimed.

The BNP leader said it has become clear through the media reports and video footage on social media that the criminals fled without any obstruction in front of police after carrying out the attacks and making videos of these incidents.

On the other hand, the Awami League did not announce any program for the day.

The Awami Jubo League's Dhaka south unit held a rally at Mohakhali on Monday to protest BNP-Jamaat murder and anarchy.

Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash said BNP-Jamaat is an obstacle to fair elections in the country, and they are now afraid of falling under the US visa policy.

Parash urged everyone to tackle these conspiracies saying: “Be vigilant, be careful. Deal with these conspiracies. We need to bring Awami League back to power in the upcoming elections.”

The Jubo League chairman said: "BNP-Jamaat has always done politics of murder. BNP has brought Jamaat into politics, and made their leaders ministers. Then they killed 18 members of Bangabandhu's family on August 15, just like the genocide. Yet they wear labels and say we blame them. We do politics of oppression.

"The Awami League leaders and activists who are soldiers of Bangabandhu can never attack people. They have been jailed and tortured for the rights of the people throughout their lives.”

Awami Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Presidium Member Md Enamul Haque Khan, Publicity Secretary Joydeb Nandi, Joint General Secretary Md Rafiqul Alam Joarder, Organizing Secretary Abu Munir Shahidul Haque Chowdhury Russell and also spoke at the rally.
