Govt mulls introducing double decker coach for trains

The Parliamentary standing committee of Railways Ministry has recommended adding double-decker coaches in railways.

This recommendation was made in the meeting of the committee on Sunday, taking into consideration the issue of increasing the number of passengers in the railways.

However, there is no plan to procure double-decker coaches in the 30-year master plan of the railways.

ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, the committee president, also a ruling Awami League MP, mentioned in the meeting that many countries including neighboring countries now have double decker coaches.

“Though the issue is not in the master plan, we have recommended adding it to the master plan. This recommendation has been made considering the issue of increasing railway passengers,” said the committee president.

At the end of the meeting, a circular from the parliament secretariat informed that the standing committee emphasized the construction of the Dhaka circular railway line in the meeting.

The 30-year master plan of railways is currently under implementation.

A total of 230 projects are underway in six phases from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2045.

The projects included in the Railway Master Plan are being implemented in accordance with the Five Year Plan of the Government.
