Law Minister: Comilla attack cases will be tried in Speedy Trial Tribunal

Law Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said trials of the cases filed over the recent attacks on Durga Puja mandaps in Comilla will be held in Speedy Trial Tribunal.

The minister said the accused has been identified from CCTV camera footage. "There is a section [in the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act] to accept CCTV footage as evidence. So, there will be no problem regarding that."

He said this in response to a journalist's question at the welcoming ceremony for the newly appointed sub-registrars and view exchange meeting at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka.

After getting the investigation reports from the police, Anisul said, the cases will be sent to the Speedy Trial Tribunal.

On October 13, a 999 call to police reported that a copy of the Quran was found on an idol of a puja venue in Comilla.

Locals said they found a copy of the Quran on the lap of the Hanuman idol, but his weapon, a club, was missing.

Several temples and puja venues in the city came under attack in the afternoon as tension mounted over allegations of sacrilege.
