Increasing amount of vehicles on the road due to cattle market and the bus terminal has created a traffic congestion in Dhaka's Gabtoli area.
This has led to an increase in waiting times at traffic signals for those entering or leaving the city on Monday, causing significant discomfort to travellers amidst the current heat.
On the route to Gabtoli from Dhaka city, traffic congestion has formed from Shyamoli via Kalyanpur. Vehicles are forced to wait for an extended period at the Darus Salam Technical signal.
Similarly, those moving towards Gabtoli via Technical Mor from Mirpur-10 to Mirpur-1 are forced to wait at the signal prior to Government Bangla College.
Local trader Hamid said that as Monday is the last working day before Eid, the pressure of travellers is expected to increase by evening.
“The cattle market and the vehicle turnaround at the Gabtoli roundabout have created more traffic in this area,” he said.
Traffic police reported that managing traffic congestion in Gabtoli, particularly due to the cattle market, remained a constant challenge.
Vehicles carrying cattle often create pressure on other parts of the road while trying to manoeuvre correctly, which results in traffic congestion, they said.
Moreover, buses departing from and arriving at the Gabtoli bus terminal create additional traffic chaos as they park haphazardly on the roads.
Traffic authorities are advising everyone to leave in good time ahead of Eid to cross Gabtoli.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (media and public relations) Faruk Hossain said the number of law enforcement members has been increased at every bus stand in the capital to ensure the smooth journey of those leaving the city for Eid-ul-Azha.
“Our traffic police members are working to maintain normal vehicular movement on roads for those entering and exiting the city,” he added.
