Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Major General AKM Nazmul Hasan has said the failure to stop border killings is due, in part, to a lack of motivation and monitoring by ground-level officers of the Border Security Force (BSF) of India.
The BGB chief made the statement on Thursday in response to journalists' queries following the conclusion of the 53rd director general-level border conference held at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana.
"There may be a lack of motivation or other factors at play among the BSF officers at the lower levels who work at the border," he said.
"I highlighted these issues at the conference to stop border killings," the DG continued.
Major General AKM Nazmul Hasan remained hopeful that the situation will improve if the BSF can enhance their control measures and manage these issues.
In response to a question, the BGB director general said: "Killings at the Bangladesh-India border occur at different times, much of which is coincidental. However, any murder at the border is distressing for either the BGB or the BSF."
BGB ready for national election
The BGB chief said his force is prepared to undertake any responsibility centred around the forthcoming national parliamentary election, for which preparations have already begun.
"The BGB plays a massive role in elections. Preparations have begun well in advance, keeping the election in mind. I hope that we will be able to perform the responsibilities entrusted to the BGB during the election with professionalism and competence,” he said.
