10 Jamaat-Shibir activists sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent 10 Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists including its Banani unit Ameer Tajul Islam and Secretary Maulana Rafi to jail.

The Jamaat men were detained on Tuesday while they were holding a secret meeting at a Banani restaurant.

The accused are Shahinur Islam, Ruhul Amin, Hafizul Islam, Abu Bakkar Siddique, Sagar Hossain, Abu Bakkar, Shahinur Rahman and Noore Alam.

As the accused were produced before the court on Wednesday, Banani police station Sub-Inspector Alamgir Hossain asked the court to keep them in jail until the investigation is  over. Later, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arfatul Rakib's court rejected their bail application and ordered to send them to jail.

The case statement said the accused were conspiring with each other to overthrow the present government by carrying out acts of sabotage against people, government buildings and vehicles.

They met in a meeting at Nawabi Restaurant in Banani Wireless Gate.

They were arrested from there on Tuesday night. Banani Police Sub-Inspector Saidul Islam filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act in this connection.
