24 school students fall sick due to extreme heat

As many as 24 high school students fell sick across the country due to the extreme heatwave ongoing in the country.

In Comilla, 22 students from Subal-Aftab High School in Gouripur fell sick in Daudkandi upazila.

Of them, two students were hospitalized, confirmed Daudkandi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahinul Islam. 

On Tuesday, a sixth grader from the same school died, allegedly from a heat stroke.

After this incident, the Wednesday and Thursday examinations of Subal Aftab High School have been postponed.

In Noakhali's Chatkhil upazila, two school students were hospitalized as they fainted and fell ill on their way home after an exam due to excessive heat. The students are Tanjila Sultana, and Kaniz Fatema Ria were admitted to Chatkhil Upazila Health Complex on Wednesday in serious condition.

Both of them are studying at Bhimpur Polytechnic High School and Technical College of the upazila.

Chatkhil Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Khandkar Mushtaq Ahmed said that the two students lost consciousness in the extreme heat.

On May 29, a fifth grader died after participating in a sports event in the middle of the day organized by a local school in Tangail.

Her death is believed to have been caused by the heatwave. Two more students also became sick while playing in the same tournament the next day.  

On the other hand, two more tea garden labourers died of heatstroke in Moulvibazar on May 31.
