AL, JaPa's Sylhet mayoral candidates told to show cause over polls code breach

The Election Commission (EC) has issued show-cause notices to the Awami League and the Jatiya Party's mayoral candidates for the upcoming Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury and Nazrul Islam Babul, respectively, for violating the electoral code of conduct.

The letters, signed by Returning Officer Faisal Kader, were sent to the two candidates at around 2:30pm on Tuesday.

They were asked to appear before the Election Commission in person the next three working days and give an explanation as to why action should not be taken against them.

The letter said no candidate or political party, person, organization or institution on behalf of anyone can do any kind of election campaigning before the allotment of electoral symbols – in this case June 2.

But these two candidates started campaigning before the scheduled date and violated the electoral code of conduct.

Returning Officer Faisal Kader told reporters: "I received a complaint against two mayoral candidates for violating the electoral code of conduct… Further action will be taken based on their response."
