Govt requests for users info from Facebook, TikTok on the rise

Tech giants like Facebook and TikTok have been receiving increasing number of requests from the government to remove contents and user information in recent times.

According to reports published by Facebook's parent company Meta since January 2023, the number of requests from the Bangladesh government is gradually increasing.

Last year, the government sought information about a maximum of 2,449 accounts or users.

Again in this month's Tiktok report, from July to December of last year, the Bangladesh government requested Tiktok to remove 3,813 contents; which is the highest number so far.

Of these, TikTok has taken action against 113 contents for not following their community guidelines and 1,142 contents for not following local laws.

The government regularly requests information from social media platforms about users. Both Meta and TikTok publish their transparency reports every six months.

The report shows how much information users have requested from their country's government and how much they respond to it.

According to Meta's latest transparency report, from July to December last year, the Bangladesh government sought information about 1,278 users or accounts.

Meta has provided 64.83% information.

And from January to June last year, the government requested TikTok to remove 1,923 pieces of content.

TikTok also removed content on its own. For example, from last October to December, TikTok removed over 4.2 million videos.
