A BNP leader from Noakhali, who was on the run after a video of him making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went viral online, has been detained in Dhaka.
Police nabbed Abdur Rahman at a hotel room in the Naya Paltan area of the capital around 4am on Sunday, said Senbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iqbal Hossain Patwari.
“The local Awami League unit is preparing to file a case against the BNP leader for his indecent remarks about the prime minister,” added the OC.
Abdur Rahman is the chairman of Chatarpaiya union parishad in Senbagh upazila of Noakhali and joint general secretary of the upazila unit of the BNP.
Earlier, police detained three people, including Abdur Rahman's son, Nazmul Hasan Hridoy, during a raid carried out to detain Abdur Rahman.
Locals said that during a party meeting on Thursday, Abdur Rahman made several derogatory comments about Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina.
The US welcomed Sheikh Hasina with a “garland of shoes,” while other prime ministers were welcomed with flowers, Abdur Rahman was quoted as saying.
“I think, now Sheikh Hasina does not even think of the BNP as an opposition party, Sheikh Hasina thinks of America as the opposition party,” he said.
A 1:58-minute video of his speech caught the attention of the district administration, and since then police had been trying to detain him.
