Jahangir: Individual defeated, not Awami League, in Gazipur mayor race

Following the winning of independent candidate Zayeda Khatun in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election, former mayor Jahangir Alam clarified that it was a setback for an individual, rather than Awami League.

Returning Officer Md Faridul Islam unofficially declared Zayeda Khatun the winner at 1:30am on Friday.

Speaking on the matter, Jahangir Alam said: "My mother contested against an individual and emerged victorious. She has expressed her intention to collaborate with all the candidates who participated in the election."

Expressing his loyalty to the party, Jahangir Alam referred to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as his mentor and asserted that he had always upheld his allegiance to the Awami League and will continue to do so. “We all strive to construct a well-planned city collectively," he mentioned.

Prior to this, Jahangir Alam had remained present at the centre since the commencement of the result announcement. However, boat candidate Azmat Ullah Khan did not attend the centre.

The voting process took place on Thursday from 8am in 480 centres across 59 wards, concluding peacefully at 4pm without any untoward incidents.
