Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Molla Nazrul Islam on Wednesday said a total of 5,000 police officers will be engaged in maintaining law and order during the Gazipur City Corporation election to be held on Thursday.
In addition to the police force, 960 members of Ansar and 4,800 village police officers will be deployed – two and 10 per centre, respectively – complemented by Ansar personnel led by an executive magistrate in each of the city's 57 wards, said the GMP commissioner during a security briefing event at the city's Shaheed Barkat Stadium.
Dhaka TribuneHe stated: "Our goal is to maintain our track record of conducting fair elections. This involves a unified effort from all participants, including the administration and law enforcement. We will provide steadfast security around the election centres. We believe this approach will ensure a fair and successful election for Gazipur's citizens."
The police officer highlighted that out of the 480 centres for the city elections, 351 are considered crucial and will be given special attention.
To maintain law and order, Molla Nazrul Islam reminded that presiding officers have magistrate powers, and any matter requiring resolution must be communicated and handled according to the law.
The GMP commissioner emphasized the importance of ensuring polling stations' security, recognizing potential security risks and maintaining communication with presiding officers.
Dhaka TribuneAddressing law enforcement officers, he stated: "When voting begins, everyone must queue up, no one should use physical force and everyone must behave properly. It is crucial to treat voters and the public respectfully. Special attention should be given to our many female voters and the elderly or disabled."
Md Faridul Islam, the returning officer for the election, said all forces, including district administration, are working in unison to ensure a successful city election.
He confirmed that Gazipur has been secured with five-tier security.
Dhaka TribuneWhether a candidate's agents would be kicked out from polling stations as before, Md Faridul Islam stated that they are mindful of the concerns raised by journalists and are considering all situations.
The returning officer reassured all that immediate action would be taken if any unusual incidents came to their notice.
He called upon all voters in Gazipur to cast their vote peacefully, without fear.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure that voters can exercise their franchise in a safe and orderly environment,” Faridul Islam said.
