Broadband internet services may be disrupted in coastal areas of Bangladesh due to the incoming Cyclone Mocha.
Internet service has been interrupted due to power outages in various parts of the country including Dhaka on Saturday.
Regarding coastal areas during Cyclone Mocha, President of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh, Emdadul Haque said they are in constant contact with the internet service providers of the coastal area on behalf of the organization.
“The concerned organizations have been asked to keep network engineers on duty so that there is no disruption in the service,” he added.
He added that Internet service providers in coastal areas have been advised to install POP (Point of Presence) offices or houses on the second floor or above so that the POPs are not damaged by the tide.
He also said that if there is no problem with the electricity supply in the concerned areas, hence they can provide uninterrupted internet service. “If there is no power for a long time then the battery will not be able to provide backup for a long time.”
Cyclone Mocha is gradually moving further toward the coast and is now 630km away.
The maximum wind speed has now increased to 190km per hour on Saturday.
According to the special weather bulletin of BMD, the very strong cyclonic storm Mocha, located in the East-Central Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas, is moving north-northeastward and becoming more concentrated in the same area.
It was 705km south-southwest of Chittagong seaport, 630km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport, 695km south of Mongla seaport and 645km south of Payra seaport on Saturday afternoon.
The maritime port of Cox's Bazar has been asked to hoist great danger signal no 10 lowering the previous great danger signal no eight (8).
At the same time, Chittagong and Payra ports have been asked to hoist great danger signal no eight and Mongla local warning signal no four (4).
