Action will be taken against suspended Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayor Jahangir Alam after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, Awami League's Dhaka Divisional Organizing Secretary Mirza Azam has said.
“Even though Jahangir Alam committed a great sin, Sheikh Hasina pardoned him. He stated in the application that he would not do anything against the discipline of the Awami League for the rest of his life, but he applied to become a candidate (GCC polls) and violated that,” he said at an event in Gazipur on Thursday.
The organizing secretary added that Jahangir Alam has committed a “heinous crime” by breaking the party's discipline, and he must be punished.
He noted that the party would have forgiven him if he only applied for candidacy, but Jahangir's statements to the media not only broke the party discipline but also was a crime.
“The day before yesterday we had a meeting and talked with Gazipur and central leaders. Everyone agrees that action should be taken when the prime minister comes to the country or she will tell us what to do with him,” he added.
Suspended Gazipur City Corporation mayor Jahangir Alam has lost an appeal against the rejection of his nomination papers by the returning officer for the upcoming polls to the GCC.
Jahangir Alam's appeal was heard at the Dhaka divisional commissioner's office on Thursday, where his appeal against the cancellation of his candidacy was rejected.
As a result, the order of the returning officer to cancel Jahangir's candidacy remains in effect, as confirmed by sources at the divisional commissioner's office.
Meanwhile, Jahangir announced that he will go to the High Court against this decision.
Jahangir had submitted his nomination papers to run as an independent candidate outside the party's decision.
