Shibbari Mor in Khulna will not be renamed, Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Mayor Talukder Abdul Khalek has said, following a public outcry over it.
"The name of Shibbari Mor will not change during my stay as mayor," he told Dhaka Tribune on Saturday night.
"There will be no discussion on this matter in Sunday's meeting, even if it is on the agenda. I am taking responsibility for it as the mayor."
The 19th General Council meeting of the KCC is scheduled to be held on Sunday. Mayor Talukdar Abdul Khalek will preside over it.
Some 14 issues up for discussion are on the agenda, according to a notice signed by KCC Chief Executive Officer Laskar Tajul Islam. Issue number 5 is the renaming of Shibbari Mor of the city.
It has been proposed that its name should be changed to Bangabandhu Chattar and that the current Bangabandhu Chattar be renamed Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Chatwar.
The proposal was met with objections and negative reactions on social media.
