At least three drug shops and 8-10 shops have allegedly been robbed on the main road of Manikganj city early Thursday.
A group of thieves have taken cash and goods from several shops. In each case, the group of thieves broke into the store in the same manner.
Four people have already been detained on charges of theft. Three of them have confessed to the theft.
There were no municipal lights on the streets where the thefts took place. Meanwhile, the traders are panicking over multiple theft in one night.
Sabuj Pharmacy, City Drugs, Desh Library and Samsung Mobile shops opposite the high school gate on the main road of Manikganj, Shahid Rafiq Road, were allegedly robbed. Tk15,000 from Sabuj Pharmacy, Tk3,000 from Desh Library and Tk3,000 from City Drugs were stolen. Robbers tried to break the shutter of the Samsung Mobile store but could not enter.
Besides, Tk15,000 was stolen from Amin Pharmacy in Paur Market, 100 yards away from the high school gate. An attempt has been made to break the shutter of a shop named Maer Doa.
On the other hand, Tk2,000 were lost from the Ma General Store on Gangadharpatti Street in front of Devendra College, several packets of cigarettes and mobile cards from Khan Variety Store and a several packets of cigarettes along with mobile cards from a shop named Piash.
Besides, a gang of thieves raided two liquor shops in Seota and Jayara areas of the city and took away cash, mobile cards and lakhs of taka. Besides, attempts have been made to break the shutters of three more shops in Bangram area of the municipal area. However, there was no damage done as the group of thieves could not enter the shop.
Manikganj Sadar police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Abdur Rauf Sarkar confirmed the matter and said that police were sent immediately after learning about the incident. Attempts are being made to arrest those involved in the incident.
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ghulam Azad Khan said: “I visited all the shops in the morning. Multiple police teams are working on the theft.”
He said the thieves will be brought under the law soon, adding that there were no municipal lights on the roads in the areas where the theft happened.
