President M Abdul Hamid will exchange greetings with the cross-section of people at Bangabhaban in Dhaka on Saturday on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the greatest religious festival of the Muslims.
This would be his last Eid at Bangabhaban as President Hamid's second term in office expires on April 23. President-elect Mohammed Shahabuddin will take oath the following day.
"The president will take part in Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at the National Eidgah in front of the High Court at 8:30am.
Later, he will also exchange Eid greetings with people of all classes at Bangabhaban from 10am-11:30am," the president's Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin told the media.
He added: "The president will also deliver a short speech on the occasion."
The head of state will exchange Eid greetings with people of all classes and professions, including senior politicians, judges, poets, litterateurs, writers, journalists, teachers, intellectuals, and civil and military officials.
The longest-serving president in the history of Bangladesh, Abdul Hamid was the acting president after the death of Zillur Rahman in March 2013. He was elected to his first term in April 2013 and re-elected to his second term in 2018.
Abdul Hamid was elected as a member of parliament from Mymensingh 18 as the youngest person elected in the 1970 Pakistan general election. He was elected as the member of parliament for Kishoreganj 5 from the Awami League in the general elections of 1973, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2009.
For his contribution to the Liberation War in 1971, he was awarded the Independence Award in 2013.
