EC: Expats in UAE to get NIDs after Eid-ul-Fitr

The Election Commission will launch a pilot project to complete voter registration of Bangladeshi expatriates living in UAE will be launched after Eid-ul-Fitr.

The commission will send a team to the UAE to complete the registration, EC Secretary Jahangir Alam said in a briefing on Wednesday.

He said every voter will come to the concerned embassy and apply for NID. Then there will be a local verification and investigation process in the country. Later fingerprints and other information will be taken at the embassy.

After the Election Commission prepares the smart card in the country, it will be sent to the respective embassies through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Expatriate Bangladeshis can get smart NID from there.

He said: "The work of issuing NIDs has not progressed during the pandemic.” 

So far, more than 5,000 expatriate Bangladeshi voter registration applications have been received from six countries. Of this, 4,500 applications are pending. About 300 applications have been approved, and 200 applications have been cancelled.

“Verification of their local address is in progress,” the EC secretary said.
