Hundreds of motorcyclists have formed a human chain in Dhaka to demand a revision of the draft policy that bans motorcycles on the Padma Bridge.
They held this program in front of the National Press Club on Friday.
Several biker groups, including Bike BD, KB Riders, National Bikers, and BD Bikers took part in the human chain.
Regarding the new speed limit suggested for motorcyclists, they said they want all vehicles to follow that rule, especially unregistered battery-run autorickshaws, three-wheelers, and buses.
The protesters noted that the mentioned vehicles usually run at a speed of 40-50kmph, which is a lot higher than what the authorities have set for motorcycles. In the draft policy, the maximum speed of motorcycles in cities has been suggested at 30kmph.
They have also urged the authorities to review whether or not motorcycles are behind most road crashes before banning and limiting the vehicle on the road and highways.
A policy is reportedly being formulated to reduce road accidents by regulating motorcycle movement, encouraging safe use and use of less risky bikes alongside increasing awareness among riders.
The Motorcycle Movement Policy-2023 recently formulated by the government aims at reducing the use of fast bikes which will bring down the number of casualties in road crashes as well.
A nine-member committee headed by Joint Secretary of Road Transport and Highways Department Anisur Rahman prepared the draft policy.
The committee includes representatives of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), the Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET), the Roads and Highways Department, and the Bangladesh Police.
