Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a legal aid and human rights organization, said that between July-December 2022, a total of 640 girls and women across the country had been victims of rape.
The information was revealed at a press conference at the district office of ASK in Gazipur city Tuesday afternoon.
Advocate Asma Khanam Ruba, coordinator of ASK, said that 27 women were raped and gang-raped in Gazipur in the last six months and one woman had committed suicide after being raped.
At the same time, 161 women were victims of sexual harassment and other forms of harassment across the country. 37 men were tortured and harassed and five men were killed while protesting these incidents. Two women across the country committed suicide due to harassment, she added.
In 2022 (July-December), 251 women were victims of domestic violence across the country. Out of which, 152 people died due to torture and 55 people committed suicide. 640 women were victims of domestic violence in 2021. During the same period of that year, 76 women were tortured for dowry. Among them, 30 women were killed after physical abuse and one woman committed suicide.
According to the information unit of ASK, three women were victims of abuse during July-December last year through arbitration and fatwa. Among the three women who were physically abused during the arbitration, one woman committed suicide after the torture. Besides, in 2021, a total of 12 women were victims of arbitration and fatwa.
During July-December of the same year, 14 female domestic workers were tortured. Among them, seven women died after physical abuse and one woman committed suicide. On the other hand, five women were victims of acid attack in July-December 2022.
