CID final probe report says Chhatra League leader Diaz died by suicide

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday submitted its final probe report on Diaz Irfan Chowdhury's murder case, saying the Chhatra League leader had committed suicide.

The investigating officer of the case, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Chittagong CID Abdus Salam Mia, submitted the report to District Court Inspector Zakir Hossain Mahmud six years after the death of Diaz.

Zakir Hossain Mahmud said the report will be submitted to the court on Sunday.

Diaz's elder sister, Jubaida Sarwar Chowdhury Nipa, said they did not know about the report submission.

“The accused of the case knew about the submission before us. They posted a status on Facebook, through which we came to know about it. The police did not speak to us before filing the final report,” she said.

“We will protest the report and ask the court to task another agency to probe into the incident,” she added.

On November 20, 2016, the body of Diaz was found hanging from the ceiling of his room near Chittagong University.

Diaz was a former joint secretary of the Chittagong University unit of Chhatra League and assistant secretary of its central committee.

Four days later, Diaz's mother filed a murder case against 10 named and 10 unnamed persons.

Although a first autopsy conducted at Chittagong Medical College Hospital had concluded that he had committed suicide by hanging himself, a second autopsy at Dhaka Medical College Hospital determined that he had been murdered by strangulation.

Diaz's family and associates in Chhatra League claimed he had been murdered by his rivals over tender manipulation.
