Due to the ban on the transportation of goods by Russian cargo ships, the machinery goods of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) has arrived at Mongla port in Bagerhat via India.
The Bangladesh flag ship 'MV Aparajita' anchored at jetty no-7 of the port at 2.30am on Thursday with power plant machinery.
The ship's shipping agent, Al Safa Shipping License Director HM Dulal said: "1,690 tons of machinery of 989 packages came from Russia. Although it is a product of Russia, it comes in transit from Haldia port in India. Now they are being unloaded from the ship.”
Within two days, it will be delivered by road to the authorities of RNPP in Pabna's Ishwardi after it is fully cleared.
He said: "The United States imposed a ban on the transportation of Russian goods on 69 ships of seven shipping companies. As a result, the goods imported from Russia for the Rooppur power plant were cleared in India after it was denied permission by Bangladesh port authority. After that, these products have been brought to Mongla Port from India.”
Earlier, another Bangladeshi ship 'MV Sejuti' anchored in Mongla with 1,048 tons of goods on the evening of February 16.
The goods of that ship have already been delivered to Rooppur after discharge.
On January 22, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said Bangladesh will not accept the Russian ships which are under sanctions, noting that Bangladesh has developed a good relationship with the US.
Bangladesh has conveyed to the Russian side that they can send any ship except the sanctioned 69 ships carrying equipment for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
Earlier on January 17, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided a list of 90 banned large cargo ships to the shipping Ministry so that it can stop the ships from entering the ports in Bangladesh.
These vessels are subject to US and UN sanctions.
