Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikha Hasina greeted Md Shahabuddin with flowers on Sunday morning ahead of the submission of the nomination of the latter as the party's presidential candidate.
Sheikh Hasina's younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud, Chief Whip of Parliament Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, presidium members Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Muhammad Faruk Khan, and Organizing Secretary Biplab Barua were among others present at the time at Ganabhaban.
Md Shahabuddin is all set to become the next occupant of Bangabhaban as the 19th president of Bangladesh.
The deadline for the submission ended at 4pm, and Mohammed Shahabuddin became the president-elect by default as no other party had picked a candidate for the election.
He was all set to be elected even if there had been another candidate as the Awami League has an absolute majority in parliament. Awami League lawmakers hold 302 out of 350 seats in the House.
