GMP commissioner: Some clues found over trader Rabiul’s death

Gazipur Metropolitan Police commissioner Molla Nazrul Islam on Monday said that he got the clues through the investigation committee over the death of Yarn trader Rabiul Islam.

Rabiul Islam was arrested four days before his death.

Moreover, he was arrested on the charge of gambling and whether the complaint was true or not is being investigated, he said.

Immediately after the incident, two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) Mahbubur Rahman and Nurul Islam of Bason police station were dismissed.

Bason police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Malek Khasru was removed from his duties a few days after the incident.

The inquiry committee has submitted an inquiry report to the inspector general of police (IGP) recommending his dismissal.

In the press conference, the GMP commissioner said that it has been confirmed that Rabiul Islam did not die in police custody. “We have interviewed the family members of the deceased, people around his house and 87 others. However, some of them said that Rabiul was arrested by the police four days before his death,” he added.

He noted some information that Rabiul Islam was arrested four days ago, released from the police station at night, he was not taken home when he was released, the matter of his release from the police station was not informed to the higher authorities, and the CCTV camera of the police station was broken.

“We are going to take monitoring measures from GMP headquarters to strengthen the operation of CCTV cameras. This will catch whoever is turning off or damaging the camera or keeping it turned off,” he added.

The GMP commissioner added that the investigation is still ongoing.

The members of the three-member investigation committee are Additional Police Commissioner Md Delwar Hossain, Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Torab Md Shamsur Rahman, and Additional Deputy Commissioner Khairul Islam.

Police arrested Rabiul and three others on charges of gambling on January 14. However, the police released three of them.

On January 17, a team of police went to the house of Rabiul and took a signature on a white paper from his wife.

After that, Rabiul's wife learned that her husband was dead.

Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee headed by Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Md Delwar Hossain was formed to investigate this incident.
