Brahmanbaria by-polls: Missing candidate found in Dhaka home

An independent candidate of Brahmanbaria-2 by-polls, Abu Asif Ahmed, who was said to be missing by his wife, was found at his residence in Dhaka on Thursday.

The candidate's wife, Meherun Nisa Meherin, said her husband was staying at their home in the capital's Bashundhara area.

In this regard, Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain said that Asif's wife had filed a complaint about his disappearance at the Ashuganj police station on Tuesday.

“Abu Asif Ahmed's wife Meherun Nisa Meherin told the police that her husband was staying at their home in Bashundhara,” he added.

In response to a question about whether Asif went into hiding voluntarily, the officer said that they are yet to interrogate him.

Asif allegedly went missing on January 27. He is the former president of Ashuganj upazila unit BNP and the former chairman of upazila parishad.

In the Brahmanbaria-2 by-poll, he is the main opponent of the expelled leader of BNP and five-time Member of Parliament Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan.

An appeal was made to the authorities concerned for tracing Asif and ensuring a level playing field for a free and fair election.

Meherin submitted the written letter to the deputy commissioner of Brahmanbaria and the returning officer of the by-election on Tuesday.

The by-polls to Brahmanbaria-2 was held on Wednesday
