A special court on Monday convicted and sentenced extremist blogger Shafiur Rahman Farabi to seven-year imprisonment and fined him Tk20 thousand in a case lodged under ICT Act for threatening an Imam.
Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge AM Zulfiqar Hayat pronounced the judgment in presence of the convict and sent him to jail afterwards.
The case was filed against Farabi on July 23, 2014, with the capital's Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Police filed charge-sheet against him under section 57 (2) of the ICT Act on August 20, 2015.
The court on February 18, 2016, framed charges against him and came up with the judgment today after examining six witnesses on different hearing dates.
Earlier,on August 20, 2015, Md Mainul Islam, inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of police and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against lone accused Farabi in the case.
On March 2, 2014 Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Farabi, a student of Physics department at the Chittagong University, from the capital's Jatrabari area for his alleged involvement with the sensational killing.
Farabi made a post on Facebook in 2013, giving life threat to an Imam, who led the namaz-e-janaza of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider.
An active member of banned militant outfit Hizb-ut Tahrir, Farabi was arrested on March 2, 2015, in writer Abhijit Roy murder case.
On February 16, 2021, Judge Md Majibur Rahman of Dhaka's Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal awarded Farabi to life term imprisonment over the brutal murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy.
