Two cases have been filed in Gazipur over vandalizing government assets and attacking police over the alleged custodial death of a trader, Rabiul.
The cases were filed on Thursday night with Bason police station. It was not confirmed how many people were made accused in the cases.
However, both cases have been registered by the police, a source at the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) told this correspondent.
Meanwhile, another businessman Delwar Hossain said that he was arrested on the night of January 14 for gambling.
Delwar told reporters that Rabiul was detained on the same night as well, but got to know about it the next day.
He added that he was not taken into the police station after being detained, rather was kept in police vehicle for an hour and a half.
He did not see whether anyone else was brought to the police station that night. Delwar said he was interrogated and dropped in front of his shop later.
On the other hand, talking to the people of the area around Bason police station, it was known that none of them have received any news of any road accident on the Dhaka-Tangail road in the last seven days.
They said that if there is any accident in the area, the patient is first taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital.
Dhaka TribuneHowever, regarding the death of Rabiul, the police informed his family members that he was killed after being hit by a truck on the Dhaka-Tangail road near Bason police station.
Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On Thursday, after seeing Rabiul's body, his brother-in-law claimed the injuries the body bore were not from a road accident.
“The body had injuries from assault. There was blood on the nose and mouth, the soles of both feet, and his ankles were cracked. People don't get injuries like this from accidents,” said Rabiul's brother-in-law Rafiqul Islam at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.
He said Rabiul's family is currently going through a bad phase. “In this situation, they have not taken any decision whether they will take legal action or not.”
Rabiul's body was taken from Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue around 9pm on Wednesday. Later, the body was buried in the family cemetery at around 11am on Thursday.
Police arrested Rabiul and three others on charges of gambling on January 14. However, the police released three of them.
On January 17, a team of police went to the house of Rabiul and took a signature on a white paper from his wife.
After that, Rabiul's wife learned that her husband was dead.
Malek Khasru, officer-in-charge of Bason police station, said two sub-inspectors took Rabiul to the police station and they let him go from the police station on January 17.
However, on the way home, Rabiul was knocked down by a truck, he said.
Rabiul was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to police.
Enraged by the death, local people, equipped with sticks, put up barricades on Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways on Wednesday morning, disrupting traffic movement.
Two policemen from GMP were withdrawn from their duty on Wednesday over the death.
The policemen are Mahbub and Nurul Islam, both assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of Bason Police Station, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Torab Mohammad Shamsur Rahman told UNB.
Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee headed by Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Md Delwar Hossain has been formed to investigate this incident, he added.
