There are 15,561 women in the police force, which amounts to 8.19% of police personnel, Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has said.
The IGP was speaking at an event, titled “Glorious Journey and Achievements of Female Police 1974-2022”, in Dhaka on Wednesday.
“The brave and active role of women is widely appreciated in the country as well as in the international arena, and there is more expectation from the public for the women members of the Bangladesh Police to uphold human rights, including creating a sense of security in women and children,” he said.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman realized the necessity of equal participation and empowerment of women in the development of the country and started a new chapter by appointing the first 14 women members in the Bangladesh Police in 1974, the IGP said.
Subsequently, the number of women in the police force has gradually increased since 1999 due to the initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he added.
