An activist was killed in a clash between two groups of Awami League in Dirai of Sunamganj on Monday afternoon. At least 50 people from both sides were injured in the clash.
The deceased is Azmal Hossain Chowdhury.
The clash took place at the triennial conference of upazila Awami League held at the BADC ground of the upazila on Monday afternoon.
Azmal Hossain Chowdhury's nephew Rahmat Ali said: “My uncle and I were hit by two bricks, and my uncle's back was injured. I treated his wound with ice right away and drove him to the hospital. At one point, my uncle passed away.”
At the Dirai upazila Awami League's triennial conference, party presidium member Nurul Islam Nahid, MP served as the conference's chief guest, and Ahmad Hossain, the divisional organizing secretary for Sylhet, served as the keynote speaker.
After the meeting began, fights broke out when supporters of Mosharraf Mia, the previous mayor of the Dirai municipality, were denied access to the stage.
The injured included Mosharraf Mia, district Awami League leader Kamrul Hasan Chowdhury, district Jubo League joint convener Asaduzzaman Sentu, Awami League leader Ebadur Rahman Kubad, municipal councillor ABM Masum Pradeep, among others.
Azmal Hossain Chowdhury allegedly died after being hurt by a brick that was thrown in front of him during the altercation, according to Mosharraf Miah, who also claimed that Azmal was his worker.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dirai police station Saiful Alam said that currently the situation is peaceful. One person died, but details are not known yet. Some people were injured in the clash as well.
