Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the concerned government officials to take necessary steps to squash various misleading news that there is a liquidity crisis in Bangladesh.
She instructed officials of Bangladesh Bank to give a clear explanation about the rumors being spread on social media.
The prime minister gave the directive at the cabinet meeting on Monday.
The cabinet meeting was held at the Prime Minister's Office in the morning. Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam briefed the media at the secretariat at around 1:30pm.
The cabinet secretary expressed apprehension about an upcoming crisis in the economy due to the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war, the transition from the pandemic and the decrease in the arrival of Chinese goods.
The prime minister has given six suggestions to overcome the crisis.
Focus BanglaThese are: food production should be increased, skilled workers should be sent abroad, initiatives should be taken to increase remittances, foreign investment should be increased, food stocks should be maintained and initiatives should be taken to give relief to importers by exempting tax at source on food imports.
Recently propaganda is being spread on social media stating that people are withdrawing their deposits from the banks due to a shortage of liquidity in banks.
However, in a press release on Sunday, Bangladesh Bank brushed off the liquidity crisis rumour saying bank deposits are completely safe.
"Although the banking system of Bangladesh is in a strong position, misleading news is being spread on different social media platforms, provoking people to withdraw their deposits from banks," said the release.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank spokesperson GM Abul Kalam Azad told Bangla Tribune that if any bank fails to pay the deposit money, Bangladesh Bank will take action against them.
“Any complaints of customers should be reported by calling 16236. We will investigate based on the complaint,” he said.
