A cargo ship carrying 850 tons of coal for the Rampal Maitree Power Plant hit a shoal on the Poshur River yesterday – damaging the vessel's deck.
No one was injured as the master of MV Jumaira-1 ran aground the shoal and the crew could climb down safely from the ship.
However, cracks have appeared on the vessel's deck on both sides.
Faruk Gazi, the master of the vessel, said that the ship was carrying coal when it left the Harbaria area of Mongla Port around 10am. On its way to the power plant, the ship's bottom hit a shoal in the Charkana area.
Commander Sheikh Fakhruddin, the harbor master of the port, confirmed the matter and said all 12 people on board were now safe.
Faruk Gazi said the ship was stationed near the Karamjol tourist spot and could be moved using a crane.
