The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a member of an international human trafficking ring for his alleged involvement in the killing of 26 Bangladeshis in Libya in 2020.
Rafiqul Islam Mal, 38, was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while trying to flee to Dubai on Wednesday night.
CID Special Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nazrul Islam confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.
Nazrul Islam said Rafiqul used to smuggle people through Dubai to Libya with the promise of sending them to Europe to lead a better life. He had formed a ring in Libya where he would send people on the pretence of sending them to Europe.
Besides, he was in the country when the 26 Bangladeshis were shot dead in Libya. He was arrested after remaining in hiding for the last one-two years.
The human trafficking unit of the CID is working to arrest the other members of the gang.
