Soybean oil price could go up again

Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vanaspati Manufacturers Association has put forward a proposal to the commerce ministry to raise the price of both bottled and loose soybean oil by Tk15 per litre.

The association wrote to Commerce Ministry Senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh on Thursday.

Refiners and manufacturers blamed the rise in the price of crude oil in the international market and the devaluation of the taka against the US dollar for their move.

The commerce ministry said the Bangladesh Tariff Commission would assess whether the ask was reasonable or not, adding that the ministry would take a decision after getting the statutory body's report.

Every litre of bottled and loose soybean oil sells for Tk178 and Tk158, respectively.

If the proposal is accepted, one litre of bottled soybean oil would cost a customer Tk193 and loose soybean oil Tk173.
