Mirsharai dredger capsize: Remaining 4 bodies recovered

Bodies of remaining four people who went missing after a sand-extraction dredger capsized in Mirsharai upazila of Chittagong because of tidal waves caused by Cyclone Sitrang have been recovered.

With the latest development, the bodies of all missing people have been recovered and the number of deaths in the incident climbs to eight.

The deceased were identified as Alam Sarder, 60, son of Nuru Sarder, Shahin Mollah, 45, son of Anis Mollah, Tarek Molla and Basar Howlader, hailing from Patuakhali district.

Coast Guard and Fire Service diving teams recovered the body of Alam around 10:30pm on Wednesday and the bodies of three other people were recovered on Thursday morning. 

Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mirsharai Police Station confirmed. 

The 63-hour rescue operation ended with the recovery of Basar Howladar's body at 10:30 am, said the OC.

The bodies were handed over to family members. 

Earlier, four bodies of the eight missing people were recovered in the dredger capsize incident. 

There were nine workers on the dredger, Saikat-2, when it capsized in the Sandwip Channel off the Mirsarai coast because of strong wind and waves during Cyclone Sitrang on Tuesday.

Salam, the only one who managed to swim to safety, said his eight coworkers had been trapped inside the dredger.
