Three schoolmates and friends have died following the sinking of an engine-powered boat in the Shitalakshya River in Narayanganj.
The boat sank near the Nabiganj ghat area around 10pm on Friday, said Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service Fakhruddin Ahmed.
The deceased are shawon, 17, Jhim 18, and Rifat, 18, all of whom were tenth-graders at Narayanganj Bar Academy.
Quoting witnesses, Fakhruddin Ahmed said the boat carrying 14 passengers was on its way to Hajiganj ferry ghat from Nabiganj ferry ghat.
The three friends were returning home from a fair in Nabiganj, and the boat suddenly sank when it reached the middle of the river.
Most of the passengers managed to swim to safety, but the trio went missing after the incident.
The bodies of Shawon and Jhim were fished out from the river at around 11pm. Rifat's body was found at midnight.
Moniruzzaman, in-charge of Narayanganj Sadar River Police, said the bodies were handed over to their families.
Following the mishap, the boatman, Alamgir, was detained for carrying passengers exceeding the vessel's capacity, Narayanganj Sadar River Police Sub-Inspector Md Forkan said, reports UNB.
