The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is now conducting a probe to trace the whereabouts of Rahima Begum during the first nine days of her disappearance on August 27.
PBI has sought the remand of Rahima Begum’s husband Bellal Ghatak alias Belal Howladar.
PBI Inspector Abdul Mannan, the investigating officer of the case, along with two others, went to Bandarban to further probe the case.
During the investigation, the law enforcers found that Rahima Begum was in Bandarban for 11 days from September 6. She stayed with Achia Begum for 5 days and with Moni Begum for 6 days at Islampur in Bandarban Sadar.
Later she came to Quddus Mollah’s house in Syedpur village of Faridpur’s Boalmari upazila, said Khulna unit PBI Superintendent of Police (SP) Syed Mushfiqur Rahman.
“PBI was not able to trace Rahima’s whereabouts for the first nine days of her disappearance. PBI is working round the clock to unearth the mystery. We suspect that Rahima Begum’s husband, Bellal Ghatak, who is in jail, had a hand in this. Therefore, we have placed a remand plea to the court for questioning him. Rahima’s hearing is yet to take place,” said he.
A Khulna court on Tuesday granted bail to four people who had been arrested in the case filed over the disappearance of Rahima Begum.
On August 27, Rahima allegedly went missing while fetching water near her home in the Banikpara area.
Her children reportedly found her sandals, scarf and the pitcher she was carrying from the spot and reported the incident to the police.
As many as six people were arrested till September 12 over the incident.
Police initially suspected that she had left her home due to some family dispute over land.
The entire incident got diverted when her daughter Moriom Mannan claimed to have traced her dead body on September 22.
However, the police rescued her from a house in Faridpur on September 24.
Currently, Rahima Begum is undergoing treatment in Dhaka.
