A Rohingya man has confessed to killing four people, including three leaders (majhi) and a volunteer, in the Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
In a video message on Facebook, the young man named Md Hasim claimed he was a member of an Islamic organization called “Mahaj” and described how he killed the four with a weapon in hand. The video went viral on Wednesday.
The four are the head steersman of camp no 18 of Ukhiya, Ismail of camp no 7, Ershad of Kutupalong Extension Camp-4H block and head steersman Azimullah.
He also claimed the organisation had given weapons to 25 young men like him to establish an Islamic way of life in the camp.
“We were paid huge sums of money to carry out the assassinations. Our main task was to kill those who worked on the repatriation of the Rohingyas. Within 5-6 days, we killed three steersmen, along with a volunteer,” Hasim said in the video.
In the video message, Hasim also mentioned the names of four spokespersons of “Mahaj”. They are Shahab Uddin, Rahmat Ullah, head steersman Bhuiyan and Maulvi Rafiq. Hasim said they lead the organization.
Hasim said the organization is planning a major mission in the near future, but he has realized his mistake and now wants to return to normal life.
Armed Police Battalion (APBn)-8 Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Farooq Ahmed said: “Action will be taken against those who were mentioned in the video. We are always vigilant about the security of the camp.”
