Interns at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) continued their strike for the third consecutive day on Saturday protesting what they said was the failure of the law enforcement agencies in identifying the attackers on their fellow Sazzad Hossen.
However, the work abstention of the interns seems to have little effect on the regular activities of the DMCH.
Visiting the hospital, the UNB correspondent found that doctors are giving services in the wards but there are no interns there.
Rahima, a patient's attendance at the emergency ward, said, "I did not have to suffer that much to admit my daughter in the hospital."
"For the absence of interns, there seems to have no problem in the services of the hospital in daytime but during night some problems arise as senior doctors leave the hospital early or some do not attend," said a physician preferring anonymity.
Contacted, the officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station said: “We have got some primary information and we are working based on those clues. I think we will be able to identify the culprits within three to four days."
The Dhaka Medical College and Hospital interns went on strike for an indefinite period on Thursday in protest against the ‘failure of the police to arrest those who attacked one of their peers on Monday’.
The work abstention was called by Dhaka Medical College and Hospital Intern Doctors’ Council on Thursday.
Earlier, the Council had given a 48-hour ultimatum to identify the attackers and take legal steps against them, which did not bear any fruit.
On Monday night, some students of Dhaka University thrashed Dr Sazzad Hossen on Central Shahid Minar premises "without any valid reason".
"Around 9pm on August 8, I sat on the premises of central Shahid Minar. Suddenly, some students of the University of Dhaka (wearing T-shirts with the logo of Dhaka University) appeared and started asking me about my identity and institution," Dr Sazzad wrote on his Facebook page.
"When I told them that I am a student of Dhaka Medical College, they wanted to check my identity card. As I failed to show my identity card at that moment, they started beating me and hurled abusive words at me.”
Later, the victim filed a complaint against some unidentified people at the Shahbagh Police Station in this connection. An FIR was subsequently filed on the basis of the complaint.
