The police have arrested a man on charges of strangling his wife over some jewelleries in Savar.
The law enforcement agency arrested Sadnam Shakib Hridoy, 30, in Savar municipality on Friday afternoon, Savar model police station OC Kazi Mainul Islam said.
The family of the deceased, Samia Akter, 25, said the two got married five years ago.
Samia’s maternal uncle Ashikur Rahman said: “Samia’s father and uncles gave her 25 bhoris of gold, a motorcycle and furniture worth Tk3 lakh at the time. Soon after, her mother-in-law tricked her into giving up the gold jewelleries. Samia would often get into altercations with her husband and in-laws over the ornaments. They used to beat her up whenever she raised the matter.”
At 3pm on Thursday, Samia rang up her family and said Hridoy and his parents were hitting her, Ashikur said.
“Hridoy called us by phone at 3:37pm and told us that Samia had suffered a stroke and had been rushed to Enam Medical College and Hospital. We reached the hospital only to see Samia’s dead body,” he continued.
Samia’s husband and her in-laws had killed her over the jewelleries, Ashikur claimed, before demanding the perpetrators be hanged.
OC Mainul said Samia’s father had filed a case in this connection, accusing Hridoy and his parents.
The police were now trying to arrest Samia’s father- and mother-in-law, he added.
