The Bangladesh Awami League and its associate bodies on Monday observed day-long programs to mark the first day of August, mourning the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members.
A candlelight procession marked the beginning of the month-long mourning at one-minute past zero hours in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi 32.
Leaders and workers of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, Awami Swechchhasebak League and Mahila Awami League took part in the procession.
Later, they placed a floral wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi 32.
Acting president of Awami Swechhasebak League Gazi Mesbaul Hossain and its general secretary AKM Afzalur Rahman Babu led the procession.
The Bangladesh Chattra League brought out a procession led by its president Al Nahian Khan Joy and general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee. Leaders of the Chattra League central committee, Dhaka University and Dhaka city north and south unit also joined the procession.
In addition, the Chhatra League also observed a candlelight vigil at the Dhaka University campus, which was joined by the university's vice-chancellor Prof Md Akhteruzzaman.
The Awami League drew up an elaborate program to observe the anniversary of the martyrdom of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The Bangladesh Krishak League organized a voluntary blood and plasma donation program at the premises of Bangabandhu Bhaban on Monday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League president, joined the program virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban.
Awami League Presidium Members, Begum Matia Chowdhury and Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Agriculture and Cooperatives Affairs Secretary Faridunnahar Laily, Organizing Secretary Advocate Afzal Hossain, and Office Secretary Biplab Barua spoke on the occasion.
BKL President Samir Chanda presided over the function while its general secretary Umme Kulsum Smriti was the moderator.
At the outset of the program, a minute’s silence was observed to show due respect to the martyrs of the August 15, 1975 carnage.
The Awami Jubo League began a month-long food distribution program to the underprivileged at Bangabandhu Avenue yesterday afternoon.
Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, general secretary Mainul Hossain Nikhil and its central and Dhaka city leaders and activists were present on the occasion.
