Satkhira Municipality CEO Nazim Uddin under probe for graft

The government has launched a probe against Satkhira Municipality Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nizam Uddin over media reports that highlighted several irregularities against him including bribery and drug addiction.

The Local Government and Rural Development ministry’s Khulna Division Director Gias Uddin is leading the investigation that began on Sunday at the Satkhira Circuit House.

LGRD Satkhira Deputy Director Mashruba Ferdous told Dhaka Tribune that the probe was launched on the orders of the Cabinet Division.

She said that 11 people including Nazim and witness Viraj Hossain were called in on Sunday with the latter providing his testimony.

Several other municipality workers have been served letters to provide their witnesses.

Allegations of several irregularities including bribery, improper behavior with employees, threatening people with cross fires or jail terms, threatening employees with firings, carrying and consuming drugs in the government car and taking unapproved holidays have been levelled against Nazim Uddin.

Municipality Mayor Taskin Ahmed Chishti wrote to the LGRD ministry and public administration ministry regarding the matter.

Moreover, the media reports against Nazim Uddin prompted the Cabinet Division to launch a probe against him.

Two years ago, Nazim Uddin was withdrawn from his post of senior assistant commissioner of Kurigram over the wrongful incarceration and torture of a journalist.
